For foreign seafarers destined to embark on ships flying the Italian flag, subject to the provisions on transit visas, and for employees of foreign companies contracted by the shipowner who are called to embark on Italian cruise ships for the performance of complementary services (referred to in Article 17 of Law No. 856 of December 5, 1986), the specific legal provisions governing the matter are observed and work authorization is not required. They allow the stay on board the ship even when it is sailing in territorial waters or stationed in a national port.
Foreign seafarers who intend to disembark from ships, flying the Italian or foreign flag, at ports located in the national territory or in the Schengen area, transit visas are issued upon confirmation of the ship’s presence, issued by the competent Italian Port Authority. In the case of disembarkation of the foreign worker on Italian territory, the general rules on entry and stay provided by the Consolidated Immigration Act apply.
This visa is given for a period of time of less than 90 days.
