Italy and the Philippines

The relationship between Italy and the Philippines has historically been characterized by friendship and cooperation.

In 2022, the two countries celebrated the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and their bilateral ties are currently gaining new, significant momentum.

As part of the European Union’s Indo-Pacific strategy, Italy has been paying increased attention to the Philippines, as demonstrated by significant air-sea transits and high-level political visits exchanged between the two nations.

One factor contributing to these positive relations is the presence of a sizable Filipino community in Italy, numbering approximately 165,000. Additionally, the two countries share a cultural affinity, partly due to the strong Catholic influence in the Philippines, where an estimated 80 percent of the population adheres to the Catholic faith.

Economically, the Philippines is positioned as one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia and within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) context, thanks to its robust projected growth rate of 6% and a growing population of 115 million. The country is a leading emerging market for Italy, offering significant potential in manufacturing, retail trade, and infrastructure development, particularly in transportation and construction.

To advance Italy’s strategic presence in the Philippines, the 8th edition of the High-Level Dialogue on Italy-ASEAN Economic Relations – a key annual event for strengthening economic and strategic ties between Italy and ASEAN member states – was held in Manila on November 5-6, 2024.
