Certificate of “Non-Renunciation” of Italian Citizenship

If the applicant has decided to establish their residence in Italy, the authorities of the Italian Municipality are responsible for recognizing Italian citizenship. Once registered in the resident population registry, the foreign national may initiate the citizenship recognition procedure iure sanguinis, which, according to the law, must be completed within 180 days. The required documentation must follow the provisions of Ministerial Circular K.28.1/1991. The applicant must be physically present in Italy to apply. It is not possible to appoint a legal representative or any other person to act on their behalf.

The request for the Certificate of Non-Renunciation of Italian Citizenship (Certificato di “Mancata Rinuncia/Non Rinuncia”) must be submitted directly by the Italian Municipality to the Consular Office exclusively via PEC (Certified Electronic Mail). The Consular Office will reply only to the Municipality (not to the applicant) and only via PEC, provided that the request has been submitted correctly.

Applicants must not contact the Consular Office directly regarding requests submitted by Municipalities or other Consular Offices, as our Consular Office is not responsible for the progress of requests submitted by third parties and cannot provide updates on procedures outside its jurisdiction.
