According to Schengen regulations, the maximum processing time for a visa is 15 calendar days, which may be extended to 30 days if necessary (Article 23 of the Schengen Visa Code). For national visas, processing times can be extended up to 30 days for family and employment-related reasons, and up to 120 days for self-employment purposes. The Italian Embassy in Manila strives to process each visa application as efficiently as possible.

Please note that, particularly during the period from February to September, applicants are strongly advised to observe the minimum requirement of 15 calendar days between the date of application submission and the intended date of travel, as applications submitted with a shorter timeframe may not be processed in time.

Applications may be submitted up to 180 days prior to the intended date of travel (270 days in the case of seafarers).

The processing times mentioned above may be extended in the case of applications submitted by nationals of countries subject to security consultations.

Legalisation of Documents with Apostille

The competent authority for the application of the Apostille on documents issued in the Philippines is the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Office of Consular Affairs – Authentication Division. To verify the authorised offices, both central and peripheral, of the aforementioned Department, please visit the official DFA website: https://dfa.gov.ph/ and navigate to the “Authentication” page.

Translation of Documents

For the translation of foreign documents into Italian, you may refer to the following private translation agencies. Please note that this list is not exhaustive of the translation agencies operating in the Philippines, nor should it be considered binding.

Please be informed that the Consular Office will verify the conformity of translations only for documents issued by local authorities which are required for procedures to be initiated at this Embassy. Examples include: birth certificates of minor children of Italian citizens to be registered in the consular registry for transmission and transcription to the relevant Italian municipality; recent marriage certificates between Italian citizens or between an Italian and a foreign national, to be forwarded to the competent municipality and also necessary for the issuance of a visa to the foreign spouse; death certificates of Italian citizens who have passed away in the Philippines.

Should the aforementioned translations contain significant errors that cannot be rectified by the Consular Office during the review process, the conformity certificate for the translated document will not be issued.

Certification of Translation Accuracy

For requests for formal certification of translation accuracy concerning procedures to be initiated in Italy (for example, applications for Italian citizenship by the Filipino community residing in Italy, or other cases requiring the translation into Italian of documents or certificates to be used in Italy), such requests must be submitted directly in Italy. These can be handled by sworn translators, whose names can typically be obtained from the registries of local court clerks or from the Philippine diplomatic authorities based in Italy. In accordance with Italian law, sworn translators in Italy are authorised to produce translations that are legally valid, once they have been duly sworn in through a formal affidavit.

Legal Assistance

The Embassy does not maintain a legal office with attorneys licensed to practise in the Philippines.

Should an Italian national encounter legal issues or disputes of a civil or criminal nature (whether under police investigation, charged with an offence, released on bail, or detained by local police or judicial authorities), the Embassy—beyond offering general assistance—can provide a list of local legal professionals whom the individual may contact for appropriate legal representation. The list of legal offices available under the heading “List of Law Firms in the Philippines” is provided for reference only and is neither exhaustive nor binding.

Drug Legislation

Drug legislation: Drug laws in the Philippines are particularly strict. We strongly advise avoiding any contact with narcotic substances, even in small quantities for personal use. If local authorities find even trace amounts of illegal drugs during inspections or checks, the individual is likely to be detained pending criminal proceedings. This could lead to severe fines and long prison sentences, including life imprisonment in some cases.

Further information is available under the “Security” section, specifically the paragraph entitled “Relevant Local Laws,” on the website www.viaggiaresicuri.it, by selecting the Philippines as the country of interest.

Child Protection Legislation: Philippine law regarding the protection of minors from abuse, exploitation, discrimination, and other offences (R.A. 7610 of 1992) imposes extremely severe penalties—including life imprisonment and substantial financial fines—for all forms of abuse, indecent acts, trafficking, and exploitation of minors.

Furthermore, the law includes provisions on strict liability offences. For instance, even simply being in the company of a minor (who is not a close relative) in either public or private settings may be considered an offence.

Given these provisions and the fact that relationships of friendship or affection may develop with Filipino nationals who are parents of minors, it is strongly advised to avoid any situation where one is in the company of foreign minors without the presence of their biological parent.
