Rules and Regulations on Geographical Indications

Rules and Regulations on Geographical Indications

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines has officially launched the Rules and Regulations on Geographical Indications (RR-GI ) on November 21, 2022, Monday, at the IPOPHL Multipurpose Hall, Taguig City.

Following its fifteen-day publication in a national journal of national circulation on November 5, 2022, the RR-GI (Memorandum Circular No. 2022-022) took effect on November 20, 2022.

The RR-GI is the culmination of the IPOPHL and its stakeholders effort and commitment to provide an enhanced protection to geographical indications as a catalyst for rural development and economic growth.

A Geographical Indication means any indication which identifies a good as originating in a territory, region or locality, where a given quality, reputation, or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin and/or human factors. The Embassy invites all Italian companies that wants to protect their products in the Philippines to register with IPOPHIL following the procedure described in the Memorandum.
